Wednesday 30 September 2015

Hi all,

Just posting a quick update on the parent meeting that was held on Tuesday night for anyone who couldn’t make it.
Assemblies: Starting on Friday 1st Oct
Our class will have their assembly on the 13th Nov
Homework:
Homework will be given out on a daily basis and will be used to consolidate the learning taking place in class.
Maths will include – revision- mental maths
Topic in class – Planet maths or teacher designed worksheet
Gaeilge: Spellings – students are only to learn two spellings a night
Phrases - occasionally phrases and written Irish work will be sent home
Duolingo – a few times a week (explained below)
English:   Spellings – based on phonics and spelling rules- 4 a night
Writing - sentences focusing on teaching point i.e. grammar, connectives,                                 vocabulary.
Reading – A variety of books will be sent home and children will be asked    to complete a book review at the end of each book.
Please check for comprehension and for new words and also keep a record of books that have been read on the sheet provided.
SESE/ARTS: Work on these subjects will be sent home when the children are
Completing projects or revising for class tests.

The children are given 10mins to take down their homework in the morning if this is not achieved in the time given they are to check their homework on the blog. Please check that your child has completed all of their homework.

Classroom Management:
Both my class and the other 3rd class are using the Class Dojo system as a management strategy this year. It is a system by which the children get to choose their own avatars and each avatar starts off with 100% every day. The majority of the time it is used as a method of positive reinforcement, however for repeated behavioral issues in the class a point may be taken away. The children have a chance to earn back that point and return to 100%. It would be great if you could log in every now and then (it does not have to be everyday) and praise your child for positive points they have received. If you see that your child has received more than 3 negative points during the one day it would be great if you could speak to them about it. Individually when a child receives 50 points they are given the option of a homework pass or picking something from the prize box. When the whole class receives 1500 points they will receive a surprise e.g. extra P.E time/trip to the playground…
Parents are given the option to sign up to Class Dojo this year. I have sent out emails and some parents have signed up already. It has been brought to my attention that some emails have not been received so I will be sending a hard copy with your child’s password and instructions included on it out tomorrow.

The children are given 10mins to take down their homework in the morning if this is not achieved in the time given they are to check their homework online.

DuoLingo link to website: https://www.duolingo.com/ -Excellent website for learning and practising Irish at home. There is also an app available from the app store. I will be placing the link on the blog every day just as a reminder for the children to log in and to give it a go. It is not necessary for your child to do it every night but it would be of huge benefit if they could use it a few nights a week. I will be able to login in and see their progress.

Link to join The Class Duolingo:  https://www.duolingo.com/o/k3wjuqrw  (I will be monitoring your progress via this website.) You may have to set up an account first and then click the link to join the class.
